Time Floats Away

What once was
Will be no more
Time will change just everything.
Now hear my clue
It’s up to you
What those changes bring.

You remember that guy
From Newbury High?
I think his friends called him Dave.
Football team’s leader
An obstinate speeder
Now he’s gotta hitch to his grave.

And sweet Peggy-Sue
With her eyes of blue
The most beautiful thing in town.
Prom night Queen
Every Boy’s Dream
Until her nervous break-down.

Time floats away
To an aim supreme
And we’re all carried along
By that endless stream

And what about Joe
The dweeb from first row
And the nasty things he underwent.
Some guys found it funny
To steal his pocket-money
But now he’s senate president.

And Billy-Bob Crowdie
School’s cruellest rowdy
With his pair of hard fists and a jack-knife.
Now he’s mowing his lawn
At his cottage uptown
With his two kiddies and a beloved wife.

Time floats away
To an aim supreme
And we’re all carried along
By that endless stream

And quiet July
So pious and shy
No one took notice of this mouse.
But now she’s got thick lips
And does her little strips
In a bar not far from the pastor’s house.

And what about Howard
Official high-school coward
And steady victim of discrimination.
This morning he knelt
With his bombing belt
On the nigh and crowded subway station.

Time floats away
To an aim supreme
And we’re all carried along
By that endless stream

And that rich boy
His name was Roy
His parents got money in plenty.
But on the market crash
They lost masses of cash
And now he’s begging for every penny.

And cheery Aster
In sports she was master
And she even made regular body-checks.
Lots of trophies she won
But at age twenty-one
She died of a sudden heart attack.

Time floats away
To an aim supreme
And we’re all carried along
By that endless stream

Don’t grieve about the past
Time – it moves so fast
Hurry up - or you’ll miss that train.
The future will pass
Some things will last
And some things will never be the same.
